Hip fractures are most often caused by falls, especially in older adults with weakened bones (osteoporosis). Still, they can also result from high-impact trauma (car accidents, sports) in younger people, or overuse (stress fractures), with risks increased by poor balance, certain meds, inactivity, and smoking. In rare cases, an underlying disease (like cancer) causes a pathological fracture.
